Usually they were worked hard and died very poor and young. They were often traded, used as a decoy, sometimes even sacrificed so a landlord could escape.
The pawns, which represent commoners mentioned, can advance only. Two spaces on the first move and not just a space after. Once a pawn reaches the last square of the territory enemy that can be changed by a piece more valuable.

With only two pieces left will be discussed next royalty. The Queen is the only female element. The Queen is the most powerful piece, big surprise huh?. Each player has only one queen. The king was often guided by the advice of his Queen. A king could have several wives at the side or even imprison the approval of the church, which needed approval from the Queen either. The stories of a queen or working against their King are well noted throughout history in medieval times, often carried a queen more powerful than the king.
Last but not least, we have the King. The King is the tallest piece on the board. Obviously, the play of his opponent wants to capture. Capturing the king is like winning the game. In medieval times, delivery King meant the loss of a kingdom. The king is the most important, but not the most powerful piece in chess. Please protect your king loses the game.
